Chippendale Gilded Phoenix Looking GlassCirca 1760-1780 The beautifully ornate Phoenix Looking Glass is an excellent example of how mirrors or looking glasses and their frames played an integral part in the decoration of rooms in the 17th and 18th centuries. By the middle of the 18th Century frames of these mirrors were being decorated with classical ornaments such as the Phoenix giving them architectural character. The term "mirror" did not come into use for all types of looking glasses until late 19th century. Until then a "mirror" was a hand held glass. The beautiful scrolled borders host a polished glass mirror and the crown of this piece holds an intricately carved Phoenix facing right or left. Our impressive hand made and hand finished version of the Phoenix Mirror is made from Mahogany. Our unique rendition of this mirror is available as a matched pair of facing phoenixes, with or without gilding. This Chippendale Gilded Phoenix Looking Glass is a welcomed accent displayed over the Oxbow Chest.
